Men’s Guide to Basic Skincare

by David Johnson

Many memes are on the internet showing how men and women dress and get ready every morning showing women mostly take an hour while men take about 5 minutes. This somehow shows the reality that women’s skincare routine is far more complex than men. However, it doesn’t mean that most men should follow this routine to be considered a real man. To grab the ladies’ attention you need to have a presentable fresh face because whether we like it or not, your appearance matters.

We can make this the simplest form of the most basic skincare routine for beginners. This will make you understand how and why you will be doing the things we will outline here. Follow the step by step guide below for a brighter and fresher looking face

Step 1 – Begin with the cleaning

Cleanse your face by starting with warm water. Warm water opens up the pores which enable the dirt to get out. While the pores are open, products you are using like facial wash can clean deeper and will be more effective. Just apply a small amount of this facial wash or according to the instruction on the label. Do not use generic soap that you use in your body. Your face has more sensitive skin than most of the body so what is effective in your body might be too harsh for your face.

Wash your face with the facial wash for 30 seconds with your fingertips in a circular motion. Make sure you start down going all the way up. This helps your skin to be tight and helps prevent loose skin.

Now you may start the rinsing process. This time, you will need to use cool water to close your pores. By closing the pores, the skin will be tighter and dirt will have a hard time entering it. Good to know fact – dirt is the one that causes pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and acne.

Dry your face by gently patting it with a face towel. Remember not to rub it as this may cause wrinkles and loose skin. Now you are done and ready for the next step.

Before proceeding to the next step you must know that you should not wash your face more than two times a day as it can cause dryness. Remember to also use facial scrub maximum 2 times a week to get rid of the dead skin which may clog up your pores. Do not use facial scrubs for more than 2 times as this may cause extreme skin dryness.

Step 2 Hydrate your skin

Your skin needs to be moisturized after washing. Moisturizers function like water to quench the thirst of the skin. It keeps it well hydrated which prevents premature aging and wrinkles. Apply a pea-size amount for your face remembering to use the pads of your fingers and patting it in a gentle circular motion.

You must remember however that anything in excess is bad. Do not use a moisturizer every second of the day as it interferes with the natural hydration process of the skin and does harm more than good. You can use it for a maximum of 2 times per day. Once in the morning after washing your face and once at night. This will ensure that your face will be hydrated well and recharged for the next day.

You may choose from oil or water-based moisturizer. Oil helps if your skin is dry to replace the natural oil that your skin is not producing. However, some brands can be greasy so check first if you prefer this option. Water-based moisturizer, on the other hand, gives you the feeling of freshness minus the oily feeling so this might work for you if you are looking for something a little loose.

Step 3 Optional add-ons

Aside from facial scrub, wash, and moisturizer you may also consider hand creams, body moisturizers and body wash with moisturizers. However, this depends on you if you have more time or patience to do it.

Body wash with moisturizers like vitamin E and jojoba oil can help with your dry skin. Hand creams can help soften your hands and prevent it from cracking easily.

This is the most basic step for beginners who would like to try out a skincare routine. Most of it is centered on cleaning and moisturizing as this is the core tips to maintain healthy and fresh skin. You may add up more routine once you get used to this basic one.
